We have recently updated to the latest major release of MediaWiki, 1.43. Below are important issues you should be aware of that we have identified.

Editing issues
Various useful editing features such as Special:RecentChanges filters and the wiki editor toolbar were not working until today (10 February 2025) due to a fault in our caching system. Note that your browser may not have cached fixed code; follow your browser's instructions to clear it as necessary.

Login issues
We are currently aware that logging in to wikis on our servers may be difficult or impossible due to a fault in an extension. We are currently working to fix the issue.

2FA issues
If you had two factor authentication enabled on any Freosan Studios wiki, you will need to set it up again. On the plus side, if you choose to use 2FA now, it will be set up on all wikis using the same secret and authentication device. There is no additional security penalty from this as all wikis run on the same hardware.

Mobile issues and fixes
The bug which causes offscreen content such as tables to not be scrollable has been fixed. However, we are aware of a visual glitch which may affect certain infoboxes and cause them to render improperly.

Freosan Studios, the host of Australian Enthusiasts Wiki, strives to take all steps necessary to ensure all the latest software is available to our users.

We have devised the following upgrade policy which lays down how we will upgrade the website.

Maintenance breaks
Upgrades can only happen during a maintenance break. When this happens, the entire Freosan Studios website, including wikis, will be shut down for upgrades. We will always announce a maintenance break three to seven days before it occurs, with an accompanying sitenotice for wikis.

MediaWiki
Australian Enthusists Wiki is currently running on MediaWiki version CURRENTVERSION.

Australian Enthusiasts Wiki will be updated to the latest MediaWiki LTS version, which is released every two years. Minor upgrades will be applied as soon as possible, with downtime being announced at least three days before the upgrade. Major upgrades will take longer to vet and will have a longer announcement before downtime.

Extensions are also upgraded to their latest respective versions automatically during MediaWiki upgrades.

PHP
Knowing that outdated PHP versions are a huge detractor on the open web, we pledge that we will update our PHP version to the latest supported by all our dependencies. Currently, the website runs on PHP 8.1.

MariaDB
MariaDB is to be upgraded simultaneously with PHP; every two months.
Why is this being done?
When AEW was first established, it was initially intended to cover Australian enthusiasm. While mostly dedicated to "transport" type interests such as elevators, trains and buses, it was eventually also expanded to cover hard drives on the basis of them being enthusiast devices, at least to some people.

However, over the years, it has been discovered that hard drive content conflicts with the goal of AEW to be a one-stop shop for Australian transport enthusiasm, given that hard drives are by no means unique to Australia. At the same time, the treasure trove of hard drive content threatens to derail this goal as well. As a result, hard drives would be split into their own wiki called Computing Classics Wiki, which unlike AEW would be a place for computing articles all around the world.
Current status
Why we perform maintenance breaks
We understand that maintenance breaks are inconvenient. However, there are vital tasks that must be done while the site is offline, including:
*Upgrading MediaWiki, Apache, PHP and MariaDB software. For the security of our users, network and our company, these software must be kept up-to-date as much as practical. It can only be upgraded while the server is offline, to prevent damage to our databases and servers.

Freosan Studios offers optional two-factor authentication to help secure your account.

Why should I use two-factor authentication?
It works by requiring you to provide a code generated by an authentication device, which if successful, verifies that not only do you know the password to log into your account, but you also have a device associated with you. It ensures that if a bad actor steals your password but not your authentication device, they won't be able to access your account.

How do I use my authentication device?
When you log in, enter your username and password as normal. The exact screen you'll see differs depending on if you're logging in to a Freosan Studios website or MediaWiki, but the principle is the same.

Next, log into your authentication device. Remember which app you used to link your account, and open that app. Find the entry associated with the service you're logging in to. (Check for names like "Australian Enthusiasts Wiki", or "Freosan Studios".) The app will present you a code; this code must be entered into the login page to continue.

I've lost access to my authentication device and recovery codes, how do I recover my account?
Unfortunately, the only pathway to recover your account if you've lost both of those is to contact us. We may ask for evidence that you are who you say you are, although we will for not ask nor will we be able to unlock your account based on confidential information such as passwords.

When too many failed attempts to log in are detected from an IP address, it will be locked out from further attempts for a time. When this occurs, all attempts to login to any account, regardless of whether the correct password and username is introduced or not, will silently fail.

Freosan Studios is committed to keeping user privacy. If we are made aware of personal information that has been unintentionally or maliciously revealed, we will remove it as soon as possible.

What counts as personal information?
The basics of what counts as personal information is gone over in our Privacy Policy. To reiterate, here is what we consider personal information.

:;Sensitive information is defined in the Privacy Act to include information or opinion about such things as an individual's racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, membership of a political association, religious or philosophical beliefs, membership of a trade union or other professional body, criminal record or health information.

Here is a non-exhaustive list:
;Personal information of an individual
*Real name
*Gender
*Date of birth
*Home address
*Occupation

;Personal information of equipment
*Serial numbers
*Account passwords

What is unauthorised or accidental disclosure of personal information?
Freosan Studios is obliged to redact personal information if it has been disclosed in an unauthorised or accidental manner. Personal information is considered to have been disclosed in an unauthorised or accidental manner if it has been either:
# Disclosed by a third party, without evidence of consent on your behalf, and you have objected to the disclosure of such information (for example, by doxxing), or
# Have been disclosed in a manner that can be proven to be by mistake, by mishandling of website features, or by a software error. There must be no evidence of intent to disclose information.

What do I do if my personal information has been disclosed against my wishes?
You must inform us immediately. The quicker we are notified, the quicker we can remove personal information from the public, and prevent any malicious actors from abusing it.

To inform Freosan Studios of leaked personal information, contact us by clicking this link. Select "I need help removing personal information" under the dropdown field, so that it can be correctly triaged. Freosan staff will assess your request, and if it is determined that:
# Personal information was disclosed based on the criteria above, and
# Such information was disclosed against the wishes of the owner (e.g. by accidental disclosure, malicious disclosure by a third party, or the subject, even if they previously intentonally disclosed it, now requests to no longer keep personal information public),
then it will be removed.

Technological measures available to Freosan Studios to redact personal information
*Deletion: Normally, content can be removed from Freosan Studios sites; it will be securely destroyed, or otherwise made impossible for the public or users to access.
*Suppression: MediaWiki supports a feature named suppression. This allows certain parts of edits to be hidden from all public view, including administration staff of a wiki who would normally be able to view deleted content. For reference, this article has been rendered on a wiki using MediaWiki.

Disclaimer
While Freosan Studios will do all it can to prevent abuse of personal information, unfortunately, anyone who happens to view a page with involuntarily revealed personal information can immediately start abusing it, and it is infeasible to track exactly who is or was currently making use of it.
